Independent agronomy for growers across Southern QLD and Northern NSW

Why growers across the Downs work with us

I’m Jeremy Dawson. I’ve spent more than 30 years in paddocks across Southern Queensland and Northern NSW, working out what the soil’s telling us and what’s worth doing about it. Dawson Ag is the practice I built around that work. We’re independent — no chemical company, seed company or fertiliser rep sitting on our shoulder — which means the advice you get is the advice we’d give our own paddocks.

What you actually get when you work with us

Practical agronomy, paddock by paddock

Soil testing and interpretation

We run our own mobile coring rig out of Withcott and coordinate the lab work through Nutrient Advantage. You get GPS-stamped samples, full nutrient and physical data, and a written interpretation that tells you what to do with it — not just a results sheet. Read more about our soil testing service.

Nutrient and fertiliser planning

We build N budgets off your actual soil tests, your yield targets and the season in front of you. Wheat, barley, canola, sorghum, chickpeas, mungbeans, cotton — we run the numbers paddock by paddock so you’re not paying for fertiliser you don’t need or coming up short on the bits that matter.

In-crop checking and pest pressure calls

Through the season we check crops on a regular schedule, watch for the diseases and pests that actually matter in your district, and tell you straight when something needs a spray and when it can wait. No spraying for the sake of it.

Seasonal planning and rotation

Pre-planting, we sit down with you and the soil tests and plan the season — what’s going where, what variety, what rate, what’s coming after it. Mid-season we adjust as the weather and the crop tell us to.

If you want an agronomist who’ll stand in the paddock with you, give you a straight answer, and remember what your soil looked like last year — that’s how we work.

About Dawson Ag

Who we are

Dawson Ag is run by Jeremy Dawson, based at Withcott near Toowoomba. Jeremy’s been working in broadacre agronomy across Southern Queensland and Northern NSW for more than 30 years — starting out in cotton country and working through every grain crop the region grows.

He holds a Bachelor of Rural Science and a Certificate in Rural Science (Cotton Production) from the University of New England. Over three decades in the job, he’s worked alongside growers, research stations and breeders, and built up a real working knowledge of the soils, the seasons and the way farms in this part of the country actually run.

Common questions

The questions we get asked the most.

We walk your paddocks through the season, run soil tests, build N budgets, check for pest and disease pressure, and give you written recommendations on what to plant, what to spray and what to put on. Independent means we don’t sell you any of the inputs, so the advice is the advice — not a sales pitch.

Across Southern Queensland and Northern NSW. We’re based at Withcott near Toowoomba and regularly work paddocks around Toowoomba, Dalby, Chinchilla, Goondiwindi, Moonie, Roma, Tara, Wandoan, North Star and the South Burnett.

We start with a paddock walk and a soil test. From there we build advice around your soil, your rotation, your equipment, your yield targets and what you’re trying to achieve. Every farm is different and the advice should be too — nothing generic comes out of this office.

Pre-planting planning, in-crop checks at the right growth stages, soil testing, N budgets, fertiliser and chemical recommendations, post-harvest reviews and a Paddock Performance Card so you can see how each paddock actually went. Dryland or irrigated, broadacre or mixed grain and livestock — we cover the lot.

Give us a ring on 0484 058 231 or fill in the form. We’ll have a yarn about what you’re growing, what you’re trying to fix, and whether we’re the right fit. If we are, we’ll come out and walk a paddock with you before anything else happens.
